Key Features

  • Optics-Ready Slide with Included Viridian RFX-11 — This isn’t just a cut slide; you get a green dot sight that co-witnesses with the front sight. No need to buy a separate optic, which saves you about $150 right away.
  • Three 16-Round Magazines — Most .22 pistols ship with one or two mags. Having three means less time reloading at the range and more time shooting, especially if you’re running drills or teaching a new shooter.
  • Ambidextrous Safety and Magazine Release — Works for lefties and righties without swapping parts. That matters if you’re sharing the gun with family or training new shooters.
  • Picatinny-Style Accessory Rail — You can mount a light or laser without adapters. Useful for low-light practice or as a bedside gun.
  • 16+1 Capacity in .22 LR — Seventeen rounds of .22 LR means more trigger time between reloads. It’s also enough for a compact defensive backup, if that’s your plan.

Who It’s For

This pistol is a great fit for new gun owners who want an affordable way to learn fundamentals without the recoil or noise of larger calibers. It also works well for experienced shooters who need a trainer that matches their carry gun’s controls, or for anyone who wants a lightweight plinker for a day at the range. The included holster and optic make it a ready-to-go package for first-time buyers.

Pros and Cons

Pros: Low price for a complete optics-ready setup; three magazines included; light enough for pocket carry; ambi controls suit left-handed shooters; reliable with high-velocity .22 LR ammo.

Cons: The trigger has a long, heavy pull—around 7 pounds per Kel-Tec specs—which can make accurate rapid fire harder. It’s not a match trigger, but it’s fine for practice.

Does the Kel-Tec P17 shoot all .22 LR ammo?

It works best with high-velocity .22 LR loads, like CCI Mini-Mags or Federal AutoMatch. Subsonic or standard-velocity rounds may not cycle the slide reliably, especially during the break-in period. Stick with high-velocity for the first 200 rounds.

Can I change the optic on the P17?

Yes. The slide is cut for RMSc-footprint micro red dots. You can remove the Viridian RFX-11 and install another optic like a Holosun 407K or Swampfox Sentinel. The included optic is a solid starter, but you can upgrade later.

Is the holster included any good?

The holster is a basic nylon paddle holster. It holds the gun securely for range use or storage, but for daily carry you’ll likely want a dedicated IWB or kydex holster. It’s a nice bonus, not a long-term solution.

How does the P17 compare to the Taurus TX22 for training?

Both hold 16 rounds and are optics-ready. The P17 is lighter (12.5 oz vs. 17.3 oz) and includes the optic and holster. The TX22 has a heavier slide that some shooters prefer for recoil feel. For the price, the P17 gives you more accessories out of the gate.
