Key Features
- Button-rifled 5-inch barrel – Why it matters: Button rifling gives you consistent accuracy shot after shot, whether you’re punching paper at the range or carrying for woods defense.
- Fiber optic front sight with adjustable rear sight – Why it matters: You get a bright, fast front sight picture for quick target acquisition, plus the ability to dial in elevation and windage for your load.
- Ambidextrous thumb safety and beavertail grip safety – Why it matters: Left-handed shooters get the same positive safety engagement, and the beavertail prevents hammer bite during high-round-count sessions.
- Skeletonized hammer and trigger – Why it matters: Lighter moving parts reduce lock time and give you a crisper trigger break, helping you stay on target through the shot.
- Full-length guide rod – Why it matters: Adds front-end weight for recoil management and helps the slide cycle smoothly with hot 10mm loads.
Who It’s For
This pistol is for the shooter who wants a 1911 chambered in 10mm for hunting, hiking, or range use. It’s also a solid option for anyone new to 1911s who wants a reliable, all-steel gun without spending twice the price. If you reload 10mm, the button-rifled barrel and adjustable sights let you dial in your handloads.
Pros / Cons
- Pros: All-steel construction soaks up recoil; parkerized finish is durable and low-glare; adjustable rear sight for fine-tuning; ambidextrous safety works for lefties; price is hard to beat for a 10mm 1911.
- Cons: The parkerized finish can show wear faster than a cerakote or stainless finish if you carry it often. The trigger, while serviceable, may need a light polish to match a custom 1911.

FAQ
Is this pistol compatible with standard 1911 holsters?
Yes, the Rock Ultra FS uses a standard 1911 full-size frame and slide profile. Most leather, kydex, and nylon holsters made for a 5-inch 1911 will fit, though you should always check for proper retention with the parkerized finish.
What magazines does it use?
It takes standard 1911 magazines chambered in 10mm. Rock Island includes one 8-round magazine with the pistol. Aftermarket options from Mec-Gar and Wilson Combat work well.
Can I shoot .40 S&W through this barrel?
No, do not shoot .40 S&W in this 10mm chamber. The case head dimensions differ and the .40 S&W cartridge headspaces differently. Stick with 10mm Auto ammunition only.
Does the parkerized finish require special care?
Parkerized finishes are porous and hold oil well, which helps prevent rust. Wipe the pistol down with a light oil after cleaning and before storage. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can wear the finish.
Is this a good gun for bear defense?
Yes, many hunters and hikers choose the 10mm for bear country because it delivers more energy than 9mm or .45 ACP. The all-steel frame and 5-inch barrel give you good velocity and control with heavy hard-cast loads.
