About this product
The FN 509 Compact MRD Comp 9mm 4.02in FDE is a striker-fired compact pistol designed for urban carry and home defense. It combines a Flat Dark Earth finish with a factory-installed auto-indexing compensator that reduces muzzle flip by approximately 25 percent, making follow-up shots faster and more accurate in tight spaces. The optic-ready slide uses FN’s Low-Profile Optics Mounting System, accepting common miniature red-dot footprints while co-witnessing with all-black iron sights. Ambidextrous controls and interchangeable backstraps let you dial in the fit for concealed carry or range work.

Key Features
- Auto-Indexing Compensator — Reduces muzzle flip by about 25 percent, letting you stay on target for faster follow-up shots in a defensive scenario. That matters when every split second counts in a narrow hallway or apartment doorway.
- Low-Profile Optics Mounting System — Accepts common red-dot footprints (like Shield RMS, Docter, and others) without adapter plates. You can mount your optic low enough to co-witness with the factory iron sights, so your dot and irons align without guesswork.
- Ambidextrous Controls — Slide stop and magazine release are mirrored for left- or right-hand operation. If you ever have to shoot with your support hand, you won’t fumble for controls.
- Interchangeable Backstraps — Three included backstraps let you adjust grip circumference to fit your hand size. A secure grip means better recoil control and more consistent shot placement.
- Flat Dark Earth Finish — The FDE coating resists corrosion and blends into urban environments, plus it looks clean on the belt or in the nightstand safe.
Who It’s For
This pistol is built for the city dweller who carries daily and wants a compact 9mm that shoots flat. If you live in an apartment and need a home defense gun that can also conceal under a jacket or IWB holster, the FN 509 Compact MRD Comp fits the bill. It’s also for shooters who plan to add a red dot later but don’t want to pay a gunsmith to mill the slide.
Pros & Cons
- Pro: Factory compensator is integrated and reliable — no aftermarket fitting or timing issues.
- Pro: Optic-ready system works with multiple dot footprints without plates, saving you $30–50.
- Con: The compensator adds about 0.5 inches to the overall length compared to a standard compact, which might print slightly more under a tight T-shirt. That’s a trade-off for the reduced recoil.

FAQ
Does the FN 509 Compact MRD Comp come with iron sights?
Yes. It ships with all-black iron sights that co-witness through the optic cut. You can use them as backups if your red dot fails.
Can I mount a Trijicon RMR on this slide?
The Low-Profile Optics Mounting System accepts common footprints, but the RMR requires an adapter plate or aftermarket milling. The factory cut works best with Shield RMS, Docter, and similar footprints. Check FN’s compatibility list for your specific dot.
What holsters fit the FN 509 Compact MRD Comp with the compensator?
Most holsters designed for the FN 509 Compact with a threaded barrel or compensator will work. Look for open-muzzle holsters from brands like Vedder, Tier 1, or Safariland. The compensator adds about 0.5 inches to the slide length, so avoid closed-muzzle models.
Is the compensator removable?
No. The auto-indexing compensator is permanently attached to the barrel. It’s designed as a factory-integrated system, so you cannot swap it out for a different comp or suppressor.
