Key Features
- 10.5-Inch Barrel – Why it matters: Shorter barrel keeps the overall length compact, making it easier to handle in tight hallways or from a vehicle without sacrificing the ballistics of 5.56.
- Stabilizing Brace – Why it matters: Lets you shoulder the gun for better control and accuracy without needing a tax stamp, giving you a legal pistol that shoots like a rifle.
- Free-Float Handguard – Why it matters: Improves accuracy by not touching the barrel, and gives you plenty of M-LOK slots to mount lights, grips, or lasers.
- Carbine-Length Gas System – Why it matters: Runs reliably with a wide range of 5.56 and .223 ammo, even during break-in. Less felt recoil than a pistol-length system on a 10.5-inch barrel.
- Flat Dark Earth (FDE) Furniture – Why it matters: Stands out from the sea of black ARs and matches well with FDE optics and gear.
Who It’s For
This DPMS Shortacle is built for shooters who want a compact, easy-to-pack AR pistol without breaking the bank. It’s perfect for first-time AR owners who want something smaller than a full rifle, or for experienced folks looking for a reliable truck gun or home defender. The brace makes it legal for anyone over 21 to own as a pistol, and the 10.5-inch barrel keeps it short enough to stash behind a seat or in a closet.
Pros & Cons
- Pro: Affordable price for a complete pistol – under $600 out the door.
- Pro: Runs on standard AR-15 magazines and parts, so upgrades are easy.
- Pro: Lightweight and well-balanced, especially with a red dot.
- Con: The 10.5-inch barrel creates more muzzle blast and flash than a 16-inch rifle – you’ll want ear pro every time.
- Con: Stock trigger is a bit heavy and gritty; a Timney drop-in would be a nice upgrade down the road.

FAQ
Is the DPMS DP51655230203 DP15 Shortacle a pistol or a rifle?
It’s classified as a semi-auto handgun because it comes with a stabilizing brace instead of a stock, and the barrel is under 16 inches. No tax stamp needed.
Does this model come with a magazine?
Yes, it typically includes one 30-round magazine. Check the product listing for your specific state’s restrictions.
What type of brace is on this DP15 Shortacle?
It ships with a SBA3-style adjustable brace, which can be shouldered legally (as of current ATF rulings).
Can I swap the barrel to a longer one later?
Yes, if you have an AR-15 armorer wrench and a vise, swapping to a 16-inch or longer barrel is straightforward. Just remember that if you add a stock, you need to comply with NFA rules.
Will this work with cheap steel-case ammo?
Yes, the carbine-length gas system and standard mil-spec bolt handle steel-case .223 and 5.56 without issues. Just keep it clean.
